Situated in the heart of St. Ives' old fishing quarter known as "Down-a-long",
the Mermaid (Seafood) Restaurant has a well earned reputation as being
one of the finest seafood restaurants in Cornwall.
The Mermaid has been a favourite haunt of regular visitors to the town
as well as the numerous TV & film stars, painters and artists who
have all discovered the magic of St. Ives and the surrounding area.
The Mermaid has been family owned and run for over a quarter of a century.
The current owner and chef, Mathew prides himself on using only the
freshest local seafood with lobsters being a favourite speciality. Mathew's
knowledge of local seafood is extensive as he spent seven years with
a fish monger whilst training as a chef before taking over the reins
of the family business. Daily specialities depend on the catch landed
on the quay or in Newlyn, with fish often carried straight off the boats
to the front door.
The restaurant is only a short walk from the harbour and Tate gallery
and has all the atmosphere you would expect of a lovingly converted
sail loft in St. Ives' oldest reputed street, Fish Street.
